The Best of America's Test Kitchen

Practical, fun, and worth its weight in chicken cutlet
I checked this DVD out of the library, then decided I needed to own my own copy. It's the best cooking class I've ever attended (even better--you can freeze and rewind a DVD. Try asking a cooking teacher in a class to back up.) The recipes are well-thought out (and tasty!), the instruction entertaining and easy-to-follow, and the tone down-to-earth. This show is about teaching you, not entertaining you with catch phrases and wacky food combinations. It acknowledges that you're not a gourmet chef with unlimited time, a pantry full of exotic ingredients, and a kitchen full of gadgets. Instead, they keep it real. Bow-tie clad Christopher Kimball is no one's idea of eye candy, but he's personable and warm, and he keeps the show grounded in the real world by asking questions, making suggestions, and adding to explanations. Everyone involved comes across as a real person, not a celebrity with an inflated ego.
The "hook" of America's Test Kitchen is that they try all sorts of different...

Overkill: Live at Wacken Open Air 2007

Blitz never disappoints
What do you expect? This is Overkill. Blitz never disappoints. From one of the original thrash bands that have stayed the course. I've been to at least 20 Overkill gigs and they are all the same. They are freakin' awesome. And I'll go to 20 more if they keep touring and coming to my town. You gotta love the between song chatter of Blitz too. He never repeats himself and is always good for a laugh. The only thing I can say bad about this DVD is that there's not enough songs! And the drummer isn't as good as Malare. But then there's only two other drummers that are. Just get it. It's cheap!

Ok
Pretty ok gig dvd. good audio and video, but nothing extra just the gig and short one of that. But still it is overkill and if you are a fan this will be your choise.

Blitz for President!
Love it. You cannot go wrong with an Overkill DVD. They're all great; sound, lights, production, playlist. A lot of bands toss out recordings by their friends and fans that are just terrible. Overkill always has a highly produced DVD. Get it!

Stanley Kramer Film Collection (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner / Ship of Fools / The Member of the Wedding / The Wild One / The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T)

Kramer vs Kramer
I ordered this Stanley Kramer collection because it had a copy of "The Member of the Wedding" on it--one of my favorite movies, and it is almost impossible to get a copy of this as a single. It is a fantastic collection and I have seen all of the movies before, but of course I had to view "Member" first and then "Ship of Fools." The actors that stand out in this collection are Tracy and Hepburn plus Poitier in "Guess," Marlon Brando in "Wild," Vivien Leigh in "Ship" with equally fine performances by Lee Marvin and Michael Dunne, and of course Julie Harris and Ethyl Waters in "Member." The most stellar performance of the whole pack is the young Brandon de Wilde in "Member." If it were re-windable, I could re-wind and watch this young man over and over and over. Too bad we lost this actor, although his skill seemed to disappate with maturity. The odd movie in this pack is the "1000 Fingers." It is a heroic undertaking, the making of this movie, but instead of being the...

Finally got "The Member of the Wedding"!
I have been looking for The Member of the Wedding for years after seeing it on TV and only saw the book until last week. I love this movie I am actually watching it right now. I think I got a great deal 5 movies for $18.26!!! You can't beat that. Even if the other movies aren't good to get The Member for that price is a steal!

Let's have a Member of the Wedding DVD
It's long overdue! Put out a single DVD of Julie Harris's great performance in this great story.

NBA Street Series, Vol. 5

Great NBA Action!
I am a fan of the Street Series DVD's. Vol. 5 just validates my opinion to the max. All the action and the coverage of these NBA superstars gets me jacked up for another NBA season. I love the piece on Kobe and Wade. Since Dirk won the title a lot of people have been jumping on his band waggon. I've been a fan for a while now of his talents and this DVD gives me the highlights and inside look that I'm looking for. Awesome, awesome DVD. Love it. Absolute 5 star buy.

Great New NBA Dvd !!
This volume 5 in the NBA Street series is an absolute amazing dvd. Great features on today's stars, such as Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki and Gilbert Arenas. Unlike some other dvd's, they really take their time to put the spotlight on these great stars. Not much talk, just A LOT of highlights and great stories !

My son loves this
I bought this for my teenage son, and he loves it. This is the 5th in a series of NBS Street Series DVD's. A bit of bio on some favorite players such as Kobe Bryant, Dirk Nowitzki, Kevin Garnett and Dwyane Wade are all here. Fancy footwork and game highlights galore. I recommend.

Great safety video
Great video to address safety for younger children. Timon and Pumbaa keep the attention of the kids and tell them about safety in a fun way that they will remember.

Safety DVD
I purchased this DVD for the fire department I was with for use in the local schools that the firefighters visit regularly to teach fire, water and home safety. It is a great DVD for teaching young kids about safety. The kids enjoyed it and they retained a lot of the lessons.

Best Baking Recipes: America's Test Kitchen

About 4 episodes worth of content.
This is not a must have DVD. It covers 9 recipes. Summer fruit tart, deep dish apple pie, classic white layer cake, chocolate mousse cake, corn muffins w/variations, creme brulee, classic brownies, spritz cookies, and molasses spice cookies.
We got this for the creme brulee recipe. and it looks great. We will try it soon and know it will come out fine because everything we have done from America's test kitchen does.
So it comes down to, are 9 recipes worth 11-18 dollars? Unless you need constant instruction every time you cook something, We don't think so.
Most of these recipes are available on their website or their subscription cooksillustrated website. not to mention their myriad volumes of cook books.
The equipment reviews seem to be pointless for a DVD. In 10 years none of the products will exist.

The printable recipes from your computer worked just fine from my OSX machine. which are all accessible through a HTML file that navigates well. Acrobat...

A Really Funny and Enjoyable Cooking Show
The first book I ever reviewed at Amazon was Cook's Illustrated's The Best Recipe. That book taught me how to write recipes. I didn't know that years later Christopher Kimball would have his own cooking show and that it would be the funniest cooking show I'd ever seen. Since I don't have cable TV or watch any regular TV either I just discovered these DVDs at Netflix. Call me old-fashioned but some things are worth the wait. I'm also at the place in my life where I have a Cuisinart Food processor and a Kitchen Aid Mixer. I've been using them and feeling like a chef. When watching this DVD I realized that pretty much every recipe requires either a food processor or mixer. So technically I would not have been able to make any of these recipes without them.

The recipes themselves? Well they are very precise. Everything seems based on science. The science of good cooking that is. You will learn a lot about technique, but even more importantly you will learn the exact brand of...

Instructional
As expected and excellent as always. Though could pack in some more recipes to justify the title and cost.

The reviews are good.

The Hunt For Red October / K-19: The Widowmaker (Double Feature)

Fantastic
Hunt For The Red October I have owned for several years and still watch it 3+ times a year. Any Sean Conery fan is treated to a really good movie with many exciting actors. Great drama and good humor as well. K19 is also very good and intersting to see Russian view point. A Winner.

Honor and Courage
K-19: THE WIDOWMAKER is an interesting story of honor, courage and duty to one's homeland and to one's comrades. It is both moving and heartbreaking and is rather depressing. The nobility of duty, even though honorable and characterized by great courage is not always a pretty picture as this film depicts. Harrison Ford gives one of his most realistic performances to date. He is not a figure of charisma. Liam Neeson's character is left to show all the human qualities that Ford's captain can not for cinematic purposes. Both actors are brilliant in this film. This is thought provoking stuff. The History Channel had great coverage on the actual event if you can find it. THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER is a highly entertaining film with an incredibly minimalist screenplay that succeeds beyond all expectations. This film's strengths are its characters and the actors that portray them. Sean Connery plays Captain Marko Ramius with great bravado and charisma relying greatly on his mesmerizing screen...

Good deal
Great pair of action packed movies in one package. I would recommend this deal to anyone that like action movies.

Academy Awards Animation Collection: 15 Winners

Here's a description of each cartoon
Don't you just hate it when the description of one of these classic cartoon sets doesn't include a description of the cartoons? In this case, they are really worth mentioning, as some, such as Disc Two's "Peace on Earth," aren't exactly kiddie fare, and many others are true animation classics (I've starred the ones I think best earn that honor). With that in mind, here's a description of each cartoon, written as I watch them:

DISC ONE

Each of these was honored by the Academy as the Best Cartoon of the Year:

1. THE MILKY WAY* (MGM, 1940)
Clear color, great clarity and a nice period song highlight this restored cute classic. When three little kittens lose their mittens, they're sent straight to bed -- where they dream that they sail a hot air balloon up into the Milky Way, a land overflowing with milk geysers and springs. The cartoon was the first Oscar winner that wasn't produced by Disney.

2. YANKEE DOODLE MOUSE* (MGM, 1943)...

Here's a description of each cartoon
There's been a lot of vintage cartoon sets in the past year, but this one is one of the best for kids. Unlike the otherwise superb Chronological Donald Vol. 3 or Popeye the Sailor Vol. 1, this one features a wide variety of characters so it never starts to wear thin. And since it's only one disc, it doesn't require you to lay out big bucks in order to own some re-mastered classics. If you're a real animation buff, you may be happier with the expanded Warner Bros. Academy Awards Animation Collection - 15 Winners, 26 Nominees. It's this disc plus two more, with many other gems, all at a good price.

Here's a description of the cartoons on this DVD. I've starred my favorites:

1. THE MILKY WAY* (MGM, 1940)
Clear color, great clarity and a nice period...

Some new-to-DVD titles here, but mostly re-issues from the Tom & Jerry & Looney Tunes DVD sets.
This set will include the separately released Winners disc Warner Brothers Home Entertainment Academy Awards Animation Collection - The 15 Winners, pluse two discs of nominees. Warner Brothers Home Video owns 38 nominated cartoons, but they have chosen to only release 26 of them. I don't know why 12 were omitted.

The Royal Tramp Collection

2 movies for the price of 1. My kind of deal!
ROYAL TRAMP 1- Wong Jing's parody of the novel Duke of Mount Deer is a funny movie with some amazing wire fu action sequences. Stephen Chow stars as a man who is just an ordinary person surrounded by extremely powerful people. He is given a mission to steal a secret book, and it's a suicide mission. He has to steal it from an evil General played by Elvis Tsui. Chow fakes being a eunuch so that he can steal the book, but instead he accidentally becomes good friends with the Emperor. The group that sent Chow on the mission wants to kill the Emperor. Why am I trying to explain the story? Its probably the least important thing about this movie. Its all about the nonstop jokes and amazing wire fu action sequences. The fights have some crazy stuff going on. If you are a fan of wuxias then you are really gonna dig this. And the comedy is also very good. In the second half of the movie alone I remember laughing outloud at least 10 times. Its a crazy ride all the way through...

Messy but enjoyable
Dragon Dynasty finally releases something from Stephen Chow. What we get is the Royal Tramp films which are really just one long film.

Chow is young and charming and Sharla Cheung(the queen mother) is a stunning beauty but the films are all over the place. The first film is an enjoyable, early 90's Chinese comedy. The second film gets messy with too many new characters continually being introduced and confusing plot twists. The second film gets pretty stupid and is not near as funny or entertaining.

Not a bad release from Dragon Dynasty. They certainly have done worse.

Two very funny movies for the price of one, a great deal
I picked this up more out of curiosity related to dragon dynasty movies than an actual knowledge of the work of Stephen Chow. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The movie is very entertaining, but more so for its comedy than for its fight sequences (though those are pretty good as well). I must say that after watching the first, I instantly watched the second. Watching the second picked up almost exactly where the first one left off, making both movies being in the collection much better for fans. As to the plot, fairly basic, an emperor, plot at assassination, and someone caught in the middle. The real reason to watch this is the comedy, a very old school style, slapstick, physical comedy, and some low brow jokes, but all very funny. While I wasn't aware of Stephen Chow before, I must say this makes me interested in pursuing his other work. Recomended!

Operation Condor / Operation Condor 2: The Armour Of The Gods

Get this movie in Cantonese with subtitles!
I love this movie, but I have to say that if you are going to get it, make sure you get a copy that is in cantonese. The english version made for america has a random nude scene inserted, and it cuts two of the funniest scenes in the movie. It is well worth reading the subtitles to see those two scenes.

The sequel better than the first?
This double DVD package is probably only for ardent Jackie Chan fans. First off Operation Condor is actually the sequel to The Armour of God no matter what the cover tells you. Next Operation Condor to me is the more entertaining movie from start to finish, with Jackie Chan's usual mix of great stunts, balletic fight scenes, and slapstick humor. The Armour of God has that as well just not enough of it. But what the Armour of God does have that all Jackie Chan fans must see (if they haven't already viewed dozens of times) is the final fight scene between Jackie and (spoiler alert) what I can only assume is a Sister Sledge tribute band in high heels and corsets. Yes I know that it his stunt team doing the actual dangerous fighting and stunts and that the actual women were probably only in the close shots. That makes it even funnier to me knowing that possibly Mars, Ken Lo, or Rocky Li were dressed in a bustier, stockings and heels while fighting and falling is amazing.

Two great Jackie Chan flicks for cheap!
Both movies are great. The first one funnier than the second but knowing me, I can't say no to any Jackie Chan films.
This is worth the purchase if you ask me.
Lots of action, comedy and much more. Gotta love it! :)

Charlie Chan Collection, Vol. 4 (Charlie Chan in Honolulu / Charlie Chan in Reno / Charlie Chan at Treasure Island / City in Darkness)

The Great Charlie Chan Series Contiues.
Warner Oland, not the first actor to play the great detective Charlie Chan on the silver screen but the man responsible for creating his look, demeaner and countenance in some sixteen Chan films, died in August of 1938. Mr. Oland's health had been slowly declining and he reportedly walked off the set of "Charlie Chan At The Ringside", (eventually completed as "Mr. Moto's Gamble" with Peter Lorre,) to eventually return to his native Sweden where he passed away in Stockholm. Meanwhile executives at 20th Century Fox had no intention of letting this most successful film series, (Chan movies reportedly earned over one million dollars each for the studio,) slip away and the great Charlie Chan casting call was announced. The man eventually selected to replace Warner Oland was the relatively obscure non oriental actor, Sidney Toler of Missouri. Fortunately with the release of Mr Toler's first Chan film in 1938, "Charlie Chan in Honolulu", it quickly became obvious that the film series was...

Four Memorable Titles In The Chan Series
Charlie Chan was originally created by novelist Earl Derr Biggers (1884-1933), who very loosely based the character on Hawaii's legendary police officer Chang Apana (1887-1933.) Biggers wrote six novels in all, and after several false starts 20th Century Fox (then simply known as Fox) hit on the right combination of actors, mystery, and comedy. The result was perhaps the single most popular film series Hollywood ever created.

Between 1931 and 1938 Chan was played by noted character actor Warner Oland. When Oland died, 20th Century Fox scrambled to find a new actor for the role--and ultimately assigned the part to Sidney Toler, who was well-regarded on stage but little known through films. In Toler's hands the character became less formal and the films began to emphasize comedy to a degree not previously seen. Some fans rebelled at the change, and even today fans continue to argue the merits of Oland vs. Toler. Even so, most fans would agree they enjoy both actors in the...

TOLER TAKES OVER
After Warner Oland's untimely death, Sidney Toler took over the reigns of playing the uncanny oriental sleuth. Keye Luke was very close to Oland and did not resume his role as #1 son. Victor Sen Yun (of Hopsing fame on Bonanza) took over Luke's role. The first Toler outing, IN HONOLULU is one of the best. The pre-war Chan movies (featured here) are some of the best work. WWII brought a more cautious series of Chan outings and they were not very entertaining. They were filled with patriotism (too much at times) and followed a "set" formula (Chan working for the US government).

The flicks in this great box set filled with extra goodies, are terrific. Only one does not feature the energetic #1 son, THE CITY OF DARKNESS and is the weakest of the entries.

I won't go into plots, they have been adequately reviewed. The transition from Warner Oland to Sidney Toler, I found very easy assimilate thanks to great scripts. Toler is more acerbic in his role then Oland. But...

Dallas: The Complete Eighth Season

The season of "haute couture," Donna Reed, and, of course, J.R.
The '84-'85 season of "Dallas" was a pivotal one in many ways. It saw the show being somewhat overshadowed in the ratings by that ABC upstart "Dynasty"; it was the year that Barbara Bel Geddes was replaced by Oscar/Emmy-winner Donna Reed in the role of the beloved "Miss Ellie"; and it also saw the "departure" of another popular cast member at season's end. Though these developments may have been new and shocking to dedicated fans, there was enough of the old to keep 'em satisfied.

J.R. (the superb Larry Hagman) is still up to his same old tricks but fids himself smitten by the new girl in town, Mandy Winger, played by Deborah Shelton. Unlike other of the oilman's conquest, Winger really appeals to J.R., not just sexually but on an "intellectual" level as well. He is determined to get her at all cost, including sending off-and-on spouse Sue Ellen (the magnificent Linda Gray) back to the bottle and the sanitarium.

Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and Pam (Victoria Principal)...

The Saga Continues - "Dallas" Season 8
This was another good season of "Dallas" that picks up where the last season set ends; Bobby's been shot and it's only a question of who did it and why. If this seems a bit familiar, it should, as 'Dallas' already did a cliffhanger about someone being shot earlier in the series. Packaging wise and quality wise, the transfer to DVD was great and the packaging is the same as the previous few seasons. Extras wise ... this area needs improvement and is part of the reason, in my opinion, this isn't a five star set. Yet again we're stuck with a pointless short feature talking about the fashion of the show which, to me, feels like we've gotten before in other sets. This was such a big season with a big event at the end of the season. Why no commentary from ANYONE? It seems like a big missed opportunity to get some insight from the cast.

Another minor critique of this season was that it was longer then previous ones but little seemed to happen in each episode unlike in previous...

Dallas Complete Season 8
This is THE Dallas season! 80's fashion has arrived at Southfork Ranch.
Shoulder pads and hair that never quits.
New characters (such as Jamie Ewing) join the old ones to make this the best season to date.
Cliff Barnes finally makes his mark on the Dallas landscape.
Pamela Barnes Ewing proves that women can roar!
How will the season end? Will Bobby remarry Pam?? Or will perhaps tragedy strike??
If you are a Dallas fan, no review can change your ideas on purchasing all the series up to the (as yet unreleased) 9th Series (The Dream Series).
If you are not a Dallas fan, then start at Series 1, and work your way up! You will never regret looking at life Ewing style.
Suffice to say, Dallas rules my DVD player, and I vote it 4 Stars (loses a Star for badly labelled Discs).

No Reservations

Light and fluffy and delicious!
A lot of people seem to be saying, "Don't watch this awful remake! Go watch Mostly Martha, the original!" I say, by all means, watch Mostly Martha, but don't bypass this version.

It's true that if I had watched this without having seen the original version, Mostly Martha, I would probably have liked it even better. This American version is really too close to the original, right down to the appearance of several characters (Leah, the sous-chef, for instance). For this reason, if you try to compare the two, it comes off as a half-hearted reproduction, Mostly Martha's reheated leftovers.

In many ways, it does lack some of the heart and depth of Mostly Martha. The characters are not as deep and intense, so their relationships aren't as meaningful to the audience. Kate is not quite as tightly wound as Martha, not quite as isolated--so her sudden inheritance of a child and the infringement of a...

A Recipe for Life
There's a light, good-hearted nature to "No Reservations" that's quite pleasing, if a little predictable. This is just as much a story of life as it is a story of romance, and we all know the formulas such films follow: a person's world is rearranged when someone new enters his or her life, and the laughter, tears, and conflict will be plentiful. I expected nothing less from "No Reservations," which is probably why I was able to enjoy it. This is a charming, funny, touching film that casts away any qualms about being formulaic, which is a good thing for anyone in need of romantic escapism. I don't dare question how realistic the events of the film are; this is not a film that bothers with realism, but rather with the idealism that life is supposed to work in a specific way. At times, it's a welcome diversion.

The plot concerns Kate (Catherine Zeta-Jones), the executive chef of an upscale New York restaurant. We immediately get the sense that hers is a very organized,...

Bland
This romantic comedy is likable but extremely predictable. Catherine Zeta Jones plays a chef at an upscale NYC restaurant who has devoted her life to being a great chef. So much so that she doesn't have time for anything else. Her sister is killed in a car wreck on the way to visit leaving her with her daughter to raise as her own. Meanwhile the new assistant chef is a carefree guy who brings big changes with him. Can you see it coming? Catherine doesn't like him at first, but then....Yes you guessed it. The story is okay and the acting is good enough, but there is nothing new here. This is a good rental to watch with the girlfriend or wife.

Evita / Frida

WARNING! "EVITA" IS STILL NOT IN ANAMORPHIC
This edition includes the two movies on two separate discs and "Evita" is still the exact same disc everyone has been overstocked with and can buy 50 copies for $10 each at Virgin. I bought this edition just assuming "Evita" would finally be formatted and watchable on a 16 by 9 tv and I don't know if I'm entitled to a refund or not so right now I'm out $18 and this distributor needs to stop being so lazy repackaging DVDs printed 10 years ago and not even watchable on a modern tv especially considering the quality of the film. So "The Wiz," "Titanic" and soon "Mrs. Doubtfire" are finally in anamorphic but this movie's still dragging behind with cinemascope-within-4:3 output that looks terrible on wide panels yet the movie is apparently good enough that it was one of the first to be released on DVD 10 years ago. I don't care about bonus features just somebody please release this movie formatted. Having said all this, it's a magnificent film. I have not seen "Frida."

Salma + Madonna, brilliant combination
Frida is a great movie; Salma was great. It's a rare but authentic story of a brilliant Mexican artist. The director did a brilliant job.

I found out this combination when I was looking for a cheap copy of Evita. Yes, many people criticize the casting of Madonna for the movie. However, I think she is a far superior fit than Elaine Paige, because she has this "been there done that" trait that was made for playing Evita.

EVITA
I was satisfied with this purchase. The disc was actually in better shape than described. The jewel case was not in great shape, but that was as described. The disc was, as stated, in better shape than described, and played as if it was brand new.

Girlfriends - The Third Season

Still love this show :-o
To this day, Girlfriends remains one of my favourite comedies. It's great the way they all interact and share laughs and fights and gossip like real girlfriends do. I feel the show keeps progressing well; not slowing down like other programmes out there. It still feels fresh and it still makes me laugh all the time.
Here is the way the episodes unfold on the four discs -

COMING TO TERMS - Singles Welcome. Joan throws a party hoping to find someone and totally strikes out. Then, she decides to hit the road and starts training for a marathon. It's been weeks and Maya still can't get Darnell to open up.

GETTING OUR ACT TOGETHER - A pastor helps Maya and Darnell pick up the pieces of their marriage. Maya finds the therapy doesn't do nearly as much good as an afternoon in ed. It's bottoms up when Lynn lowers the bar as the world's most inexperienced bartender.

SECRETS AND EYES - A birthday plan of Joan's exposes something about birthday girl...

Funny, Inspirational, Funny
My pastor always told me that when life got too hectic, to put in a sitcom and just laugh. That used to be Abbott and Costello. Now, I alternate with Girlfriends. They are smart, funny, zesty, and real. I love the fact that the writers made these four STRONG women, with convictions they stand up for.

The ladies are back!
Girlfriends - The Complete Third Season is my favorite season of the series. Joan, Lynn, Toni, and Maya are back to cause more guy problems for themselves and others. This show has amazing, witty, and sarcastic writing, great acting, and talks frankly about relationship and family dilemmas. I highly recommend purchasing season 3, you will fall head over heels in love with show. Enjoy!

We Own the Night

A Plot Threadbare from Overuse
WE OWN THE NIGHT is the quote from the lower portion of the badge on the uniforms of NYPD police family Deputy Chief Bert Grusinsky (Robert Duvall) and one of his two sons Capt. Joe Grusinsky (Mark Wahlberg): the other son Bobby (Joaquin Phoenix) did not follow the family tradition of police work but instead is involved in nightclubs - and yes there is a schism of resentment. Bobby has distanced himself further from his family by changing his last name to 'Green', living with a Puerto Rican girl Amada (Eva Mendes), and bonding to a wealthy Russian family who owns the nightclub where Bobby works - a front for a drug dealing business. Writer/Director James Gray ('The Yards' and 'Little Odessa') has a feel for this underbelly of New York City and captures the 1988 mood of life in the city and beneath the city with style. The problem with the story is that it has been done so many times that it is simply stale yesterday's lunch. Two brothers at opposite end of the family spectrum...

Both sides think they own the night
The film is covering well known territory, and it doesn't bring totally new aspects into it. Just a normal "New York cops versus gangsters" flick, imagine a cross of the Departed and Eastern Promises.
We all know that in the 90s, Mr.Giuliani singlehandedly and famously cleaned up NYC (unless it really happened differently, eg via the mechanisms mentioned in Freakonomics). Before his magic touch saved the city, it appears that NY cops were the laughing stock of the streets. Gangsters were in control, it seems.
What we have here, set in 88, is a confrontation between a Russian drug ring and the cops, among whom the father and son team Duvall/Wahlberg is prominent. They have a prodigal son/brother (Phoenix), who happens to work as a night club manager for the Russians and has a Latina girl friend (Mendes). You see right away where this is leading, but then, no, you don't quite. The script succeeds in avoiding overdone predictability. With hindsight, no big surprise happens, but...

interesting plot and fine Joaquin Phoenix performance
***1/2

Taking its title from the motto engraved on all NYPD officers' badges, "We Own the Night" is essentially the Prodigal Son story transplanted to the mean, crime-ridden streets of New York City. Robert Duvall is Burt Grusinsky, a high ranking police chief with two sons, one "good" and the other "bad." Joseph has eagerly followed in his father's footsteps by becoming a captain on the force, while Bobby wants nothing whatsoever to do with the police and, in fact, spends much of his time running around with the unsavory drug dealers who frequent the lucrative nightclub he successfully manages. It isn't until one of those associates has Joseph shot after a narcotics raid on the club that Bobby learns where his true loyalties lie. He agrees to go undercover for the force to unmask the identity of the shooter and bring down the Russian drug cartel that set Joseph up.

At times, while watching the movie, I kept thinking that writer/director James Gray had simply...

Beautiful footage
I've watched two of the four DVDs in the set so far. I've really enjoyed the aerial views of CA, and the additional DVD of Arizona.

Sound quality is excellent. Narration is informative. Watching is very relaxing, like being on a mini-vacation.

DVD for memories
I Lived in California for 3 years so wanted a good DVD to relive the area. I was disappoointed in the quality as I tried to play it on a 8 foot screen. The image was so bad that I probably will not watch all the DVDs.

The Aristocats (Special Edition)

The approach Disney seems to have forgotten
Considering Disney's recent track record, it would appear that they think the average kid is maturing faster than before. Thus, they seem to put out movies that are dark and inappropriate for the average kid. The only exceptions to this trend are the wonderful Toy Story movies and A Bug's Life. Flash back a decade or two, and you'll find a different Disney, a Disney that made movies everybody could enjoy. Aristocats comes from that era. True the animation from this decade is weak, and the story loses a few points in some areas. The villain is also quite tame. All of that, however, disappears under the movie's charm, upbeat attitude, and general fun. It's certainly more fun than Hercules. People looking for something intense should avoid this. Families with small children and those who love adorable cats will love this movie. From this era, I also recommend Robin Hood. As I've said before, you just can't beat old school Disney.

Wonderful film!
I'm so glad that Disney made this film. I much prefer the more innocent Disney movies of the past. Movies like Lady and the Tramp and The Aristocats are truly fun, wholesome entertainment. Don't get me started on the new Disney films which are way too interested in pushing hit pop songs and attracting adults with more action, violence, and suggestive dialogue. I know things can't stay the same so I'm glad we have this film from a more innocent era. I particularly like the fact that the pacing is relaxed and the villain is not very scary. I'm always looking for what I call "calm" movies and videos for my 2 and a half year old. I don't want him seeing frightening or fast-paced images. Lady and the Tramp and Emmet Otter's Jug Band Christmas are other great shows for young viewers. Unlike the sterile environment of the Teletubbies, these movies are full of wonderful images and interesting music. I find the backdrop drawings extremely interesting and stylized...

Fine Family Fun, but: All Reviews for Previous Editions Lumped Together
There are over a hundred reviews for The Aristocats as of this date. They all refer to the previous edition (Disney Gold Classic Edition or whatever they called it years ago when it first came out on dvd).
So now we will have those reviews mixed up with new reviews for the Feb 5, 2008 version which offers more extras and a different aspect ratio. This may make things a bit confusing.

Moving on...
People compare this film to 101 Dalmations. This is Disney's "cat" movie, they say. You can't compare them; they're too similiar somehow.
But they are both decent, cute family films.
Yes, Cruella is scary compared to the bumbling butler Edgar. There is a sense of jeopardy but Dalmations is much stronger in that sense.
Both films were made using the 1960's Xerox method where the resulting animation is more sketchy looking and more close to the original animator's drawings.
The Aristocats is more of a musical, definitely. A few forgettable songs, but...

The Brave One (Full-Screen Edition)

Vengeance is Mine...but Who am I?
Trauma, severe trauma, can unleash aspects of the human personality that may appear as a stranger within. Such is the premise for this well-constructed film by Neil Jordan (screenplay by Roderick Taylor and Bruce Taylor), and while the neither concept of trauma-altered personality or revenge tales is new, THE BRAVE ONE alters the vengeance idea just enough to make it credible and to even draw the viewer into believing that what the character is doing is justified and right! And that is perhaps the most frightening aspect of this terrifying film.

Erica Bain (Jodie Foster) is a night radio talk show performer, a woman who walks the city of New York gathering sounds and observing the mysteries of the 'safest big city' and relates her observations poetically to a large radio audience. Erica is engaged to young physician David (Naveen Andrews) and the couple are very much in love. One night on an evening stroll with their dog they are attacked by thugs, beaten with pipes, and...

Dark, Entertaining Foster Revenge Film
The Brave One continues Jodie Foster's recent foray into the thriller genre. So far, she's produced some pretty good results. She shouldn't be embarassed by either Panic Room, Flightplan, or The Brave One. The writing, directing, and co-stars (Terrence Howard, Naveen Andrews, etc...) are all excellent and Foster is Foster.

Foster plays Erica Bain, an engaged NPR-type radio show host. One night, she and her fiance are walking in Central Park, and are viciously robbed and attacked. Her fiance is killed, and Erica is basically robbed of her happy existence by being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Deciding that revenge is the only way for her to cope with her loss, she proceeds to buy a gun and go on the prowl for her attackers, while developing a friendship with a cop (played by Howard) working on the cases she creates with her vigilantism.

The Brave One shows how a traumatic event can leave psychological scars that are much worse than those of the physical...

"There are plenty of ways to die, the hard part is finding a way to live"
Going into a Jodie Foster film is like visiting an old friend. You typically only see her every few years or so, but you know when the time comes what an awesome experience it will be. Flightplan and Panic Room were enjoyable, lightweight thrillers, but this one is my favorite Foster film since The Silence of the Lambs because of its more dark and serious tones. Even Jodie herself admitted that this was one of her best in years. It was actually only one of two films I saw the entire 2007 year. Jodie has become an actress I have developed a great deal of respect and admiration for and so I trust what she chooses. I have never been disappointed. The film may have some minor flaws, but it's a 5-star performance all the way as to be expected. Jodie received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress this year and was also awarded the Sherry Lansing award for being one of the most powerful women in entertainment. Another worthy film to add into your Jodie collection. And even though it's...

Sword of Doom 1966

Into the Dark
Sword of Doom is the best of the non Akira Kurosawa Samurai films. The action sequences are phenomonal, and the setting is so atmospheric and beautiful it leaves you entranced. The snow scene where our anti-hero meets with his kharmic opposite for the first time (Mifune Toshiro) has to be the most beautiful setting for a battle I have ever seen. The story is of a thoughtful swordsman who is evil, yet unlike so many other films where there is no character or depth to a villains evil we really get to know Ryunesuke. His Father comments that he is fascinated with evil and therefore he has sought it out and now it has overcome him. We later see examples of his swordstyle even affected by his soul. He kills people that ask to be killed without thinking twice, and all in all he is a complex swordsmen who can't necessarily be written off as just an evil person. The ending leaves you gasping for more, wich I am told exists you just have to read the books or speak fluent japanese to...

The Great Boddhisattva Pass (Daibosatsu Toge)
Thats the real name of this story. "Sword of Doom" was to be part one of a three part story. There are other versions of this story, but none have been subtitled into english yet. Basically, the story is about a swordsman who suffers from bad karma. Everything he does comes back to haunt him. He can't stop it and goes through fits of madness. If the story had continued further you would have seen him go blind in an explosion, become an even better swordsman, and continue to suffer more because he wants to see his son again. All of this is to convey the idea in Buddhism that "Life is Suffering". Most of the people that complain about the ending of the movie are clueless about the original book story, other filmed versions, and think that "Sword of Doom" is the complete story. It is not, because the sequels were never made.

Complex, Profound, and Bloody - The Bushido Way...
The actions of a man can describe the man's true identity, as the identity of righteousness and moral character are a reflection of a man's actions. Bushido expresses honor before living, which was the way of the samurai. This honor seemed to fade away, as large numbers of samurai without masters accrued in cities and other locations around Japan during the 1860s. At the end of the shogunate in 1868, which also changed the importance of the samurai in the Japanese society, warfare began a drastic change from swords to guns and cannons. The end of samurai also indicated an end to bushido, which lead many samurai into a more corrupt lifestyle where honor no longer had the same meaning.

Sword of Doom opens in the spring of 1860 where a young woman and her grandfather climb a mountain pass where the grandfather is ruthlessly murdered without any apparent reason by the film's antihero, Ryunosuke Tsukue (Tatsuya Nakadai). Ryunosuke is the symbolic embodiment of the...

Beauty and the Beast - The Final Season

Still plenty of good stuff here
Note: This review contains SPOILERS.

This is an issue that has divided Beauty & The Beast fans for almost twenty years, and reading the reviews here, I can see a lot of people are still bitter. While the show certainly suffered the loss of Linda Hamilton, I personally found there was still plenty to enjoy in this abbreviated season.

For one thing, the season-long story arc served the show quite well. The second season's cliffhanger ending left a lot for the writers to explore. So much fuss was made way back in 1989 about the show being "retooled" to attract more male viewers. And I'll admit, there's probably a sizable portion of the potential male viewing audience that is attracted to the increased action and violence. But was the show really THAT different? We still have Ron Perlman and all the others giving it their all (and it was quite an emotional and yes, violent arc for Vincent). The late, talented Edward Albert got moved into a series regular slot. And I...

Love Endures
When the second season of Beauty and the Beast ended, I was one of the many people who wrote to get the show renewed. I had never done anything like that before, but Beauty and the Beast was a show to be passionate about.

I don't remember disliking Diana. As an audience, we weren't given much to work with where she was concerned. And it didn't help that she wasn't "Catherine."

What I do remember, vividly, is the relationship that developed between Vincent and Elliot Burch. For me, the third season was wonderful and wonderous because it showed love enduring. Both men loved Catherine and Catherine loved both of them -- though Burch's feet of clay prevented her from having a deeper relationship with him. (The first season episode where he's introduced even has Vincent acknowledging that Catherine is falling in love with Burch, so please don't think I'm being heretical.)

Seeing how loving Catherine changed Burch and made it possible for Vincent, and, to a...

Flawed, but still beautiful
The 3rd season of Beauty and the Beast definitely takes the series in a very different direction. As the new opening reveals, once Vincent gets past Catherine's murder he will dedicate his life to avenging injustice - in other words, he has been recast here as a sort of beastly Batman, searching the skies for the Beast Signal which will let him know that his services are needed. Much of the first five or six episodes are focused more on the gritty world Above than on Vincent's world in the tunnels - the photography is very different, with a sharper, darker overcast (much of the warmth associated with the tunnel worlds is lost). Additionally, character inconsistencies (especially with Roy Dotrice's "Father") undermine the overall fabric of the story for those of us who followed it closely the first two seasons. This is a much more violent show now, and it's much more "black and white." The new villain, Gabriel, who dominates many of the episodes, is simply evil personified - there...

Dirty Jobs: Collection 2

Excellent entertainment
Thank you, Mr. Rowe, for keeping us entertained. I got a copy of Collection 2 last week and have since savored every stomach-twisting episode. I don't know how the guy does it, the filth, claustrophobia, stench, physical harm, all for the sake of enlightening the audience. It is amazing what people will do for a pocketful of cash, and I would not have known about some of these jobs if not for Mr. Rowe's dedication!

Bravo, and keep 'em coming!

Always a hit!
The "Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe" series is a wonderful asset for the classroom. Many of his "dirty jobs" have a science background and provide kids with a fun, informative, real world application of science concepts and careers. A must for the science classroom!

Love Dirty Jobs
It's Dirty Jobs! It's very entertaining and funny. We get to hear Mike sing the National Anthem on this collection, WOW!

Soul Food - The Third Season

SOUL FOOD FANS BEWARE
I am very disappointed in Paramount/CBS. This series was originally advertised as "The Complete Third Season" which like the "The Complete First Season" was supposed to be made up of the ORIGINAL (unedited) shows. However, within the last few days the advertisements have quietly been changed to illustrate..."Soul Food-The Third Season." SOUL FOOD FANS BEWARE, it appears we are going to get chopped, edited, cut up versions of the original shows with different scenes, music, words, etc. I AM VERY UPSET. I fell in love with the "original" versions of these shows and that is what I'd like to see. I am not sure I will purchase this "third season." I think the studios are misguided in "cheating" Soul Food fans out of enjoying the original shows in its entirety (unedited). I was disappointed in quality of the some episodes of the second season because of the OBVIOUS editing. I wish the distributors would just release the series in it's original form and let us edit it at home IF that's what...

Paramount Finally Comes Around
I have seen all episodes of Soul Food Season 3 is Fantastic. You have to own 1, 2, and 3 to truly experience what the BUZZ is all about.....

Well first of all, I am a die hard Soul Food - The Series Fan, and was extremely pleased when the Third Season was released. Yes there is some minor editing, but overall if you purchase this DVD your money will be well spent! This DVD surprisingly contains both Season 3 and Season 4 (20 episodes in total)...check it out. A stellar cast, great storylines, you can't go wrong! Can't wait for the remaining DVD(s) to be released as it has been a LONG wait.

Perfect Strangers: The Complete First and Second Seasons

Great show makes its belated appearance on DVD
Perfect Strangers debuted to high ratings and critical praise in March 1986. Comfortably nestled between Who's the Boss? and Moonlighting on ABC's Tuesday night lineup while Growing Pains took a break, Perfect Strangers was hailed by critics as a refreshing blend of witty humor and slapstick delivery. Co-stars Mark Linn-Baker (Larry Appleton) and Bronson Pinchot (Balki Bartokomous) were lauded for their unmatched chemistry and comic talent. Comic legend Lucille Ball called it her favorite comedy. The show returned in the fall of 1986 on Wednesday nights paired with Head Of The Class, and continued to win its time slot. (It would be at least another two years before Perfect Strangers would become the centerpiece of ABC's TGIF Friday night lineup.)

Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project

Share the Warmth
Don Rickles is a king of comedy. His style of humor will be lost when he is gone. He does not tell stories, he insults and audiences have loved him for over 40 years. There are very few who can do what Rickles does and get away with it! His nickname Mr Warmth is known everywhere if you know comedy

However he is also an actor with many TV and film appearances to his credit, everything from X - The Man with the X-Ray Eyes, Beach Party/Bikini Beachto Toy Story & Toy Story 2 (2 Pack). This actor did everything from drama to comedy and made you believe.

So the question is Who is the real Don Rickles?

this special film is part of discovering Rickles. The man, the comic , the actor and human being. You see him, before he goes out into show and...

John Landis on Rickles
As a kid growing up in the 70s, I loved Don Rickles. I always tried to stay up to see him on The Tonight Show, and I caught his act several times in Vegas and on Miami Beach. I even had a "Cracked" magazine devoted to him, which came out around the time of CPO Sharkey.

This is a loving tribute by steady hand John Landis, and places Don's humor, love, and affection in context by taking the viewer through the times in which Rickles worked. Vegas, Miami Beach, the mob, Frankie, Johnny, great interview segments with close friend Bob Newhart and many others, this is a heartwarming and very affectionate tribute to a great comic and great show biz legend.

Mr. Warmth is a Genius!
I saw Mr. Rickles show on HBO and it is absolutely wonderful and very heart warming. I had read Rickles Book and knew some of his story already but this is icing on the cake. He did an excellent job of gathering all his family and friends together to make this story and their side, as well as his side, is such a tribute to a lifetime of someone who has made the world a better place to live. At first, I thought it might be a bit too vulgar to watch with my parents but then I thought, "He's THEIR generation!", and I was right, they laughed their socks off and have told everyone to look for this show on HBO. When I saw that there is a DVD coming out too, I couldn't wait to order that to go with my Dad's huge collection of Don Rickles movies and Dean Martin Roasts. Thanks to Mr. Rickles for putting such a great effort into this project. It shows and it's worth it. He's called "Mr. Warmth", as a sarcastic way of how he reacts to people during his shows. But, to us who have read his...

Tootsie - 25th Anniversary Edition

25th Anniversary Edition Worth the Upgrade!
It seems that in "special" releases, Columbia and Paramount really trail behind Warner Bros., which is why I hesitated somewhat from upgrading my barebones "Tootsie" DVD to this 25th Anniversary Edition. The first extras that I looked at were the deleted scenes; there are quite a few short ones here, none of which really deserved to be inserted. Some are mildly amusing, some shouldn't have even been shot in the first place. OK, one extra down, two to go. Next I looked at Dustin Hoffman's "screen test." Source material are original betamax tapes of Dustin first doing the Dorothy Michaels character. Although theses tests are very short, they are extremely relevatory into the talents of Hoffman. Between the time he filmed these initial test and the time that his final character was put on film, Hoffman transitioned from a bad drag queen into a believable female. Truly incredible to compare the two performances which are roughly 3 years apart. 2nd extra down, last one to go: "The Making...

Roll Tootsie
One of the other reviewers here comments that "Tootsie" is a movie that doesn't get much notice anymore. I don't know if that's true or not, but if it is true, it's a real tragedy. In my opinion, this is one of the best comedies ever made. It's somewhere between the blatant slapstick of "The Great Race" and the witty sophistication of "The Pink Panther", and it doesn't have a car chase in it, but this movie is nonstop funny from beginning to end. There is humor in just about every scene, and funny lines abound. Dustin Hoffman, one of the best actors of his generation, gives one of his best peformances as a tempermental actor who can't get a job and secretly tries out for a female role on a big daytime soap opera in drag. Of course, he gets the part and becomes enormously popular, largely because he refuses to put up with the crap that other actresses put up with. Not only is Hoffman excellent, but the rest of the cast is also outstanding. Jessica Lange...

The Ten Commandments

Compare with "The Prince of Egypt"
Depending on what you're looking for, you might prefer this film or "The Prince of Egypt."

"The Ten Commandments" follows the biblical story of Moses and the Exodus more closely, but it isn't nearly as entertaining or as well written as "The Prince of Egypt," and the animation in "The Ten Commandments" is a little odd, reminiscent of a video game. "The Prince of Egypt" ends after the parting of the Red Sea, but "The Ten Commandments" continues through the giving of the Ten Commandments to the end of Exodus, including the introduction of Joshua and the death of Moses.

I teach religion at a Catholic girls' prep school, and in my ninth-grade World Religions class, I use short excerpts from "The Ten Commandments" to illustrate Moses's encounter with God via the burning bush and the giving of the Ten Commandments. In my eleventh-grade Scripture course, I show large chunks of "The Prince of Egypt,"...

Excellent Movie for Family
This is an excellent re-telling of the Bible's Exodus. Vivid animation, color and captivating storyline that kids will just love it. The voice cast is strong and the music is excellent.

The story follows the Bible closely with scary scene tastefully done up. A good resource to introduce bible stories to kids, sunday school, etc. A MUST for any Church Sunday School Library.

The Ten Commandments with Elliot Gould is an excellent claymation movie for the whole family. the characterizations, the acting, the cinematography is well done and first rate. relive the story of moshe ha navee (the prophet)and the great miracles that Yahweh (blessed be his name forever)did through his prophet. i thoroughly enjoyed this film. we need more movies like this in hollywood. every jewish person and christian should support this film and what better way than to buy the film. what is important about this film is that bible movies can make a difference not only in people's lives but can also tell hollywood there is an alternative to their disgusting graphic movies that have very litle ie no moral values what so ever. i know people will criticize this film and give very few stars for a rating. iam not a critic of any movie that shows decency, moral values, and is based on the...

Laughing Matters: The Men

Half dozen diverse gay comics make for an entertaining time.
With a huge selection of DVDs featuring lesbian comedians, it was about time that "the men" got a chance. Gay comics Bruce Vilanch, Alec Mapa, Bob Smith, Scott Kennedy, Andre Kelley and Eddy Sarfaty are captured doing their stand up acts during the 2007 Palm Springs Gay Pride festival.

I hadn't seen Bruce Vilanch's standup routine before, and wasn't surprised it is largely just a series of memoirs from his impressive career as a comedy writer for various stars and shows. Alec Mapa was his usually bubbly and hysterical self, and Eddy Sarfaty did his usual dead-pan but creative schtick. I especially enjoyed Andre Kelley's and Scott Kennedy's acts, which largely talked about their non-typically boyhoods, how they dealt with the realization that they were gay, and how their non-stereotypical appearance throws off straight crowds a bit, when they reveal that to them. Bob Smith is an author of several books as well as one of the more recognizable faces on the gay comic...

Yeah, this was good!
A lot of times, work with male leads comes out before work with female leads. "The Bachelor" came out before "The Bachelorette." "Flavor of Love" came out before "I Love New York." Rick James made albums before the Mary Jane Girls did. This work is different. "Laughing Matters: (The Women)" was so good that I guess someone said, "Hey, let's do one with men." This is like VH-1's "The Men Strike Back."

This work is quite diverse in that it has bears, men of color, and Jewish guys. In fact, each first joke told usually dealt with the comic's identity outside of his sexuality. If you watch closely though, some guys get more air time than others. This differed from "Laughing Matters: (The Women)", if I remember correctly.

It takes so much guts to do stand-up. A whole bunch of folk can sing or model clothes and you can just assume the audience will be receptive. However, comedy is so subjective. I can watch a comedy and like it, but still not laugh out...

Well worth buying
This is the entire last season that Red was on TV after his "switch" from CBS to NBC. A few years ago selected skits were release on video. These are the complete half hour shows. If you are a Red Skelton fan, this is a must buy. The video quality is great considering this is from the early 70's. There are many great guest stars.

Christmas didn't come this year!
Unfortunately, the final Skelton series Christmas broadcast (an annual tradition) is NOT included in this package. Season 20 therefore consists of 23 (not 24) programs.

Cancelled after nearly two decades on the CBS network, THE RED SKELTON SHOW moved back to Red's original television home, NBC-TV for one final season. As in the early 1950s, each of these broadcasts is 30 minutes. The Skelton show's long-time announcer, Art Gilmore is here along with the David Rose orchestra. NBC (and other) celebs also appear. (See program list.)

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

An Homage to Western History in a Moody Daguerreotype Style
THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD is one of the finer films about the history of the Old West 'heroes' such as Jesse James. It is difficult to describe the degree of high quality of the way in which this film has been created: the script (adapted by Andrew Dominick from Ron Hansen's novel) is as poetic as it is gritty and flows like a Shakespearean tragedy both in narration and in dialog; the exceptionally fine cinematography by Roger Deakins captures the flavor of the times, shot in subtle lighting whether in darkly intimate interiors or on the vast plains at times heightened by snowlight, but always in the feeling of the quality of daguerreotypes; the musical score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis is strangely apropos without seeming to borrow from any previous source; and the cast of fine actors play the film as a true ensemble work. Director Andrew Dominik has accomplished a masterpiece.

The story begins subtly in the last year of the James gang...

A Haunting Character Exploration Of Idolization And Self Diginity. This Is A Masterpiece.
As a fan of the western genre I look forward to pretty much every western I hear is in the works since they come so few and far between nowadays. I am also a huge fan of Sergio Leone and Terrence Malick; two directors who use extremely long takes with exquisite deep focus photography. I had never heard of Andrew Dominik until I researched this film, and when I checked his history and saw that he had only done one other film called Chopper I felt skeptical as to what he would do with The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford. Then I saw the trailer which sent chills up my spine and even made my eyes water, and this film became my top priority for the fall.

The film follows Robert Ford and two of his brothers as they join the James brothers for one final robbery. Robert Ford played brilliantly by Casey Affleck sees Jesse James as his idol. He followed his stories throughout his childhood and he wants nothing more than to be accepted by this man. Affleck...

The Best Film of 2007
This film is a breathtaking account of the life and times of Jesse James. I am in complete awe that this movie wasn't more widely released because it was the best film of the year. Brad Pitt, Sam Rockwell and Casey Affleck give astounding performances, but Affleck's portrayal of the tormented and obsessive ally to James is beautiful and absolutely unforgettable. It is a shame that movies like this can come out and be mostly ignored...it should at least be nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Cinematography.
This is a must see and once you do yourself the favor of indulging in this epic, you will then know why.

After Sex

Interesting Concept, Shaky Execution
In all fairness, I don't really know what I was expecting when I ordered this movie. I browsed through the DVDs, thought I found an interesting one, ordered it, and hoped for the best. The movie arrived in perfect condition. It was still enclosed in the plastic wrapper, there was no damage to the disc, and it arrived in the promised two days guaranteed by Amazon Prime. The movie itself, however, was a little bit of a disappointment.

Firstly, let me begin by stating that I'm a woman. I'm a woman who very much enjoys the cheesy romantic comedies that present the female species with unrealistic expectations of romance. Chick flicks are a must-have, as far as I'm concerned - and how much more "chick-flicky" can you get than a movie that seemingly focuses entirely on pillow talk?

Secondly, I'm a big fan of Mila Kunis, so it was mostly her role in the film that encouraged me to purchase it. On the up side, Kunis appears in the movie for about as long as everyone else...

Just okay
I thought this was an actual movie, but it's just clips of movies, but who doesn't love Mila Kunis & Zoe Saldana! Seller shipped fast, too!

Just OK
I saw some interesting clips of this movie online, so I decided to order it and see how it is. Whoever made the clips, literally chose the best two out of the whole movie. LOL. I love Mila Kunis, and I was hoping to see more of her in there, but instead I got a bunch of random scenes kinda mushed together and called a movie. I think the idea for the movie was good, but the was it was put together wasn't very clean cut or effective.

In the Valley of Elah

A Masterpiece!
There have been many films about the aftermath of war, but never have I seen such a brutally honest and shocking depiction of the de-humanization of soldiers back from war. This is the underlying premise of the new crime thriller from academy award winning writer/director Paul Haggis (Crash).

Hank Deerfield (played by Tommy Lee Jones) is a retired veteran and military police officer searching for his son who has gone AWOL. A detective Emily Sanders (played by Charlize Theron) becomes interested in the case and starts helping Hank outside of her job. When Hank's son's body is found, the search suddenly turns into a search for the murderer.

One of the many aspects I appreciated was that director Haggis did not turn this into a typical Hollywood crime thriller and also not turn it into a political propaganda piece against the war and President Bush. Instead he mixes the two plots together seamless and subtle, letting you decide for your self.

Tommy Lee...

A Theron tour de force
First of all, I have no idea why this movie was panned or lauded during its theatrical release as some kind of statement for or against the Iraq war. After having watched it, the political ramifications of that war are, in my opinion, totally irrelevant to this movie as a work of entertainment. There have been atrocities in every war since tribes were clubbing each other with mastodon bones, so let's just put that aside.

Having been raised in the military as an Army brat -- and being a veteran myself -- I really love movies oriented toward military subjects, and this movie doesn't disappoint. In many ways, it's territory we've explored before in movies such as "The Caine Mutiny", "A Few Good Men", "Basic", "The General's Daughter", "Rules of Engagement" (another Jones movie), and many others. Why this one was castigated as being anti-war in any special way is totally beyond me.

We have a stellar cast in what is essentially a "Courage Under Fire" genre movie, a...

The rest of the story
Much has been made of the fact that this movie is based on a true story, the 2003 murder of Richard Davis, a story chronicled by Mark Boal in an extensive magazine article, "Death and Dishonor," that appeared in the May 2004 issue of Playboy (an article that can be found online and that is far more thought-provoking than this film). Cops 3-Pack (Bad Girls / Caught in the Act / Shots Fired)
GREAT DVD BUT COULD BE A LOT LONGER ON 50 MIN OF EACH SHOW PLUS 15 MIN EXTRA , SHOULD HAVE ADDED ANOTHER 30 MIN PER DVD FOR VALUE FOR MONEY

Very good DVDs
I am from Germany. When I was on vacation in the USA, I saw the TV Show Cops. Unfortunately the show is not shown in Germany. When I found out that the show as DVD appears, I bought all three DVDs. I find the show better than all action movies.
